The designation “WD-40” originates from Norman Larsen, who introduced the spray in 1953. It signifies “Water Displacement, 40th formula”, highlighting the spray’s fundamental qualities and indicating the numerous trials Norman undertook before achieving the ideal formulation.
Norman, the founder of the Rocket Chemical Company, developed WD-40 to prevent rust and corrosion on the delicate balloon tanks of the Atlas missile stored with them. Over time, it revealed countless household applications, becoming accessible to the public in 1958.
