Longboard Decks
Which Longboard Deck Should I Choose?
The longboard deck is a crucial component of your setup. Like complete longboards, they are available in an extensive variety of shapes and sizes, catering to styles such as carving, cruiser, downhill, freeride, freestyle and dancer.
Cruiser longboard decks often consist of 3 to 7 layers of maple wood, ideal for cruising and carving. On the other hand, freeride and downhill longboard decks typically contain 7 to 9 layers.
In terms of materials, maple longboard decks are the traditional choice, made with multiple veneers layered over one another. Bamboo versions are usually encased in fibreglass and offer a springy sensation. Carbon fibre decks are the priciest to manufacture but deliver a high-grade, robust, and lightweight choice.
Top Mount vs Drop Through Longboard Deck
An important decision is whether to select a top mount or drop through deck.
Drop through decks are lower to the ground, enhancing stability while riding, and feature cut outs to prevent wheel bite during turns. These are perfect for achieving high speeds. Conversely, top mount decks are excellent for carving and cruising.
No matter which type you select, be reassured that all longboard trucks are compatible.
When to Renew Your Longboard Deck
Many individuals wonder how frequently they should renew their decks. The reality is, there isn't a predetermined timeframe for when a deck needs to be updated; it depends on how often you ride and your style of longboarding. Some decks will endure years of regular use, while others may only last a few months. If you notice cracks and chips, it might be wise to consider a new deck.
There are methods to prolong your deck's lifespan. The simplest is to minimise exposure to water and sunlight, as these elements can weaken the deck and increase the chances of cracking.
