What Type of Ski Jacket Do I Need?

Each type of ski jacket has its own unique design and features. Below are the 3 main categories and what you can expect from each.

Hard Shell Jackets

Hard shell jackets are the top choice for skiers and snowboarders. They offer high levels of waterproofing, windproofing, and are lightweight because they feature a single shell layer. Since these jackets lack insulation, you can wear a mid-layer underneath for added warmth. They also serve well as rain jackets for everyday use.

Insulated Jackets

Insulated jackets resemble hard shell jackets but include an insulation layer inside. This makes them ideal for colder temperatures or for individuals who feel the cold more acutely. These jackets are less breathable and can become quite warm, especially in milder conditions.

Soft Shell Jackets

Soft shell jackets are the most breathable among the three categories. They are crafted from soft and stretchy fabric that allows moisture and air to pass through. They offer some wind and water resistance and generally require additional layers in cold conditions. They can also function as a mid-layer beneath a hard shell jacket.
