Skateboard Griptape Provides Grip and Style

Skateboard griptape is a self-adhesive sheet that you apply to the surface of your skateboard. It resembles sandpaper and is granulated to ensure a firm stance and grip on the board. Typically made from silicon carbide, skateboard griptapes often come in the standardized size of 9 x 33 inches (23 cm x 84 cm). They are available either as single sheets or in griptape rolls.

The most common griptape is black, but brightly colored griptapes have gained popularity among skateboarders. Some manufacturers also offer clear griptapes.

How to Remove Skateboard Griptape

Over time, skate griptape will wear down, especially if you frequently ride your board. Shoes and dirt can smooth the granulated surface, making it harder to perform tricks.

You can remove griptape by blowing hot air on it with a hairdryer. This softens the adhesive, making it easier to peel off using a box knife. Any adhesive residues can be scraped off gently after being treated with nail polish remover or any alcohol-based cleaner. Once the residues are gone, you can apply new griptape to your deck.

How to Apply Griptape On a Skateboard

Applying skate griptape is relatively simple and requires only a few tools. Start by removing the paper from the sticky side of the griptape. Then gently press the sticky side onto the deck, ensuring the griptape is centered before pressing it down.

As you press it onto the deck, make sure to eliminate all air bubbles - many griptapes are now perforated to simplify this process. Once this is done, make cuts in each corner of the griptape. Create guidelines for the cutout shape by pressing the tape down along the edges of the deck with a tool. Afterward, trim the excess griptape with a sharp knife. Lastly, create holes for the bolts using a pointy tool.
