What Gear Is Required for Longboarding?
To excel at longboarding, having the right gear is crucial. This applies whether you are a total beginner or engaging in thrilling hill descents or graceful dance sequences.
A complete setup offers everything necessary to embark on longboarding, fully assembled and ready for action. Seasoned longboarders may favour constructing their setup from individual pieces (further details below).
Slide gloves are indispensable for particular disciplines. For downhill and freeriding, gloves equipped with slide pucks help with maintaining balance, control, and steering, as well as safeguarding hands and wrists. These gloves are crucial when hands meet the ground during Toeside Slides, Backside Slides, Coleman Slides, and similar manoeuvres.
For a more enjoyable longboarding experience, ensure you have a reliable helmet, protective gear, and wrist guards.
Opt for a Complete Longboard or Build It Yourself?
If uncertain about where to start, opting for a complete longboard is the simplest alternative. It arrives pre-assembled with compatible components, eliminating compatibility worries.
Should you decide to construct a longboard from the ground up, you'll require these parts:
- Longboard Deck
- Longboard Grip Tape (Verify if the deck is pre-equipped with grip tape)
- Longboard Trucks
- Longboard Wheels
- Longboard Bearings
- Longboard Hardware (For riser installation, select the correct bolt length: hardware guide)
- Longboard Risers
For tailored longboard configurations, browse deck and wheel selections. Customisation allows you to align components for desired flex, concave, wheel size, and shape.
Longboarding Styles
Longboarding features various principal styles, each offering distinct approaches, objectives, and skills (feel free to experiment across multiple styles – embracing creativity and personal expression is encouraged).
The primary longboard categories include:
- Downhill: Emphasises speedy downhill moves. Participants employ an aerodynamic stance and controlled slides to safely tackle steep inclines. Precision and stability are essential.
- Freeride: Features sliding techniques on slopes, merging speed with technical prowess. It focuses on expressive, controlled motion rather than racing.
- Freestyle: Focuses on intricate tricks, spins, and manuals, usually on flat terrain, stressing creativity and board command.
- Dancing: Involves smooth footwork and cross-steps while moving. It combines rhythm and balance, often resembling a fluid dance performance.
- Cruising: Ensures comfort and ease. This is the most straightforward form, ideal for easy gliding or urban transit.
Each style demands a particular board shape, wheel variety, and setup to accommodate its specific requirements.
The Benefits of Longboarding
Longboarding is not only enjoyable but also beneficial for both body and mind. Much like other board sports, it provides an excellent aerobic workout while enhancing balance and coordination. Importantly, it is accessible to beginners and doesn’t require significant investment to start.
Since longboarding occurs outdoors, it naturally increases time spent in fresh air. The larger wheels make navigating uneven terrain straightforward, facilitating smooth travel through cityscapes, park trails, or rural paths.
